About me
Hi, I'm Sophie, an AI research scientist and applied mathematician. Currently working in the Probabilistic Machine Learning research group at the Finnish Centre for AI (FCAI) / Aalto University, I specialise in developing strategies for making innovations in AI/ML technologies fit-for-purpose in complex, high-value but high-risk domains such as healthtech, biotech and adjacent fields. This is exemplified by my PhD research at the cutting-edge of developments in AI/ML technologies, startup work in AI for healthtech, and other AI/ML-focused experience in consulting and research at Deloitte Australia, the Reserve Bank of Australia, and PwC Australia.
Several years ago, I moved to Europe and co-founded a startup working on AI for personalised health, building the first AI-powered digital therapeutic platform aimed at improving maternity health outcomes. The insights I gained through this experience about the challenges and opportunities for AI in health and biotech motivated me to pursue PhD research to address challenges for AI/ML in healthcare and precision medicine applications. My interest in leveraging my expertise to unlock the potential of AI/ML in these domains has led me to working with international, interdisciplinary research teams in the mathematical/computer sciences and life sciences, including the European-wide INTERVENE consortium and Finnish Institute for Molecular Medicine (FIMM).
Prior to my PhD (Computer Science; Probabilistic Machine Learning) at Aalto University, I completed a First Class Honours degree in Applied Mathematics at the University of Sydney, and a Bachelor of Science degree (Mathematics & Statistics, Economics) at the University of Western Australia.
